Belfast City Airport has reopened its runway after an emergency landing closed it on Sunday afternoon. Flights have resumed, but it is likely that some delays will be experienced. It happened when the plane, an Aer Lingus Regional flight being flown by Emerald Airlines, could not land about 16:00 GMT. It was going from Edinburgh to Belfast. There were rumor’s that it had landed hard, with the nose of the aircraft wheel breaking apart. However, so far, no one is reporting any casualty.
Emergency Action and Investigation
Immediately following the accident, the area around the runway was cordoned off to allow for emergency response teams to lock down the area and to take in the crashed aircraft. Air Accidents Investigation Branch opened an investigation into the incident; inspectors have visited the location to determine facts and to take evidence.
The images taken at the site reveal the plane surrounded by the emergency responders. There are damaged front landing gears.
Ripple Effect on Other Flights
The situation was really disrupting the travellers since so many flights were cancelled, and others were diverted to Belfast International Airport or even Dublin Airport. One of the passengers who were on the flight was Hilary Bratton, who flew from Leeds Bradford Airport.
According to Ms. Bratton, her situation was “tense.” She said that her aircraft kept circling over Belfast City Airport before it was diverted to Belfast International Airport.
“We were just 10 minutes from landing when the captain told us there was an issue in Belfast City. Everyone got very quiet,” she revealed. “What was to have been a short flight became nearly two hours long.”
Flights delayed at Belfast International
There was further delay as the airport had not been able to anticipate that they would all arrive there at once. Ms. Bratton said: “We sat on the plane for nearly 50 minutes before disembarking and collecting our luggage because the extra passengers had put an added strain on airport resources”.
The passengers had to decide to get back to Belfast City Airport to collect their vehicles. This further added to the time they spent on the journey.
Dublin Airport Support
Through their collective efforts, the people in Dublin Airport dispatched specialized airfield operations crews to recover the ailing aircraft. With them came aircraft recovery tools to speed up the rescue process.
“We always like to assist our neighbouring airports in such incidents,” said a spokesperson for Dublin Airport.
Business as Usual
The removal of the aircraft has opened Belfast City Airport once again to full operations with flights back on. The management of the airport encourages travellers to contact their respective airlines regarding delays or flight rescheduling.
As investigation continues, airport employees continue to ensure the operation remains smooth while keeping all the passengers in safety.
